Player-of-the-Year races are tight entering Golfweek TOC at PGA National

In Golfweek’s Senior Player-of-the-Year race, Kevin VandenBerg is all but untouchable. The 58-year-old from Pulaski, New York, has amassed a 3,350-point lead in Golfweek’s National Senior Amateur Rankings to this point in the season and is positioned to repeat as Player of the Year.

That doesn’t mean he’ll stay home for Golfweek’s final event of the season. Instead, VandenBerg, who is coming off top-3 finishes at the International Senior Invitational, Reynolds Senior and SOS Fall Classic, will tee it up at PGA National’s Fazio Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, for this week’s Golfweek Tournament of Champions. The 54-hole event will feature four divisions (Senior, Super Senior, Legends and Super Legends) and will be played Dec. 13-15.

VandenBerg is part of a deep field in the senior division, which also includes Iowa golf legends Mike McCoy, the 2023 Walker Cup captain, and Gene Elliott as well as 2019 Golfweek Player of the Year Ken Kinkopf and 2020 Golfweek Player of the Year Craig Hurlbert.

In the Super Senior division, the rankings add some drama to the competition. Greg Goode of Salina, Kansas, recently overtook Jim Starnes of Ft. Myers, Florida, at the top of the rankings. But Goode, who gained big points from his division win at the Golfweek Desert Showdown, only leads Starnes by 43 points.

The Super Senior field for the Tournament of Champions also includes Marcus Beck, the Tallahassee, Florida, resident who won Player of the Year honors in this division last year. Beck is ranked No. 5 in the Golfweek National Senior Amateur Rankings.

Notable names in the Legends division include Pete Allen, defending champion in this event, and Greg Osborne, who, earlier this year, led the Legends rankings at the same time his older brother John led the Super Legends rankings.

Perhaps the most impressive start belongs to Bev Hargraves of Little Rock, Arkansas. Hargraves has the Player of the Year title all but locked up after frontloading his schedule in an effort to do just that. After a top-5 finish in the Golfweek Desert Showdown last month, however, Hargraves began a 45-day stretch of radiation treatment for prostate cancer. In the run-up to the Desert Showdown, Hargraves told Golfweek he might suspend that treatment to compete in the TOC.

“If I need to, I’ll do it,” he said.

And here he is.

Don Donatoni, the Malvern, Pennsylvania, resident who trails Hargraves by 1,610 points, is also in the field.

In the Super Legends rankings, the top three players in the rankings are only separated by 420 points, and all three men will play in the TOC.

John Osborne of Vero Beach, Florida, leads Johnny Blank of Frostburg, Maryland, by 145 points. George Owens of Virginia Beach, Virginia, is another 275 points behind that.

Japanese twins headline 26 players who earned 2025 LPGA status at Final Qualifying

As if LPGA Final Qualifying wasn’t tough enough, Mother Nature prolonged this year’s festivities, forcing players to complete the final round on Tuesday after rain washed out most of Monday at Magnolia Grove Golf Course in Mobile, Alabama.

Japanese sisters Chisato and Akie Iwai and their countrymate Miyu Yamashita headline the list of card winners. The twin sisters boast 13 JLPGA titles between them, with Chisato’s seven victories edging Akie by one.

Chisato closed with a 71 to finish 21 under for the tournament, in second, while Akie finished 16 under in a tie for fifth. Yamashita fired a 64 on the final day of play to earn medalist honors and finish the week at 27 under.

2024 NCAA champion Adela Cernousek, who left college midseason to pursue an LPGA card, finished 11 under to earn her card. A total of 26 players earned LPGA status for next sesaon.

This marked the first time since 2017 that the final stage was played over 90 holes, with the tournament consisting of as many as 144 holes (2018 to 2022) and 108 holes last year.

A total of 67 players made the 72-hole cut and the top 25 and ties after five rounds earned LPGA status for the 2025 season. Those who did not earn LPGA cards leave Mobile with Epson Tour status for next season.

Here’s a closer look at each of the 26 players who earned LPGA status for 2025:

Arnold Palmer Cup announces coaches for 2025 competition at Congaree

LAS VEGAS — The coaches for the American and International teams at the 2025 Arnold Palmer Cup were named Tuesday during the annual coaches convention at Planet Hollywood.

Auburn’s Nick Clinard and South Carolina’s Kalen Anderson will lead Team USA as co-head coaches, while Kansas State’s Stew Burke and East Tennessee State’s Aaron O’Callaghan will guide the International team.

The 2025 Palmer Cup is set for June 6-8 at Congaree Golf Club in South Carolina. Congaree is No. 1 on Golfweek’s Best list of private courses in South Carolina and sits at T-24 in rankings of modern courses in the United States.

Anderson, hired as head coach in 2008, has helped South Carolina earn four consecutive No. 1 NCAA Regional seeds, winning five since 2010, and qualifying for the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship in 12 of the past 14 seasons. The Gamecocks have won 28 tournaments under Anderson, including the Annika Intercollegiate this fall, and have earned 48 WGCA All-America honors by 15 different players.

Clinard is in his 16th season as head coach at Auburn, and last year was his best season, guiding the Tigers to their first national championship in school history. This fall, Auburn finished inside the top three in all five tournaments this fall, including a win at the East Lake Cup.

A 2024 Arnold Palmer Cup assistant coach, Burke is in his second season as Kansas State’s head coach. The Wildcats tallied four top-five finishes this fall, including a victory in the season-opening Powercat Invitational.

Also an Arnold Palmer Cup assistant coach in 2024, O’Callaghan was named head coach at East Tennessee State on June 10, 2024. He led the Buccaneers to top-15 finishes in all five tournaments this fall. O’Callaghan spent the last six seasons as the associate head coach at Wake Forest.

The Palmer Cup is an annual competition between the top collegiate players from the United States going against their International counterparts. The U.S. leads the Palmer Cup series 15-12-1.

Scottie Scheffler wins PGA Tour Player of the Year in a landslide

Scottie Scheffler better make room in his trophy cabinet.

The PGA Tour announced on Tuesday that Scheffler, the 2024 FedEx Cup champion and world No. 1, has won the Jack Nicklaus Award as the PGA Tour Player of the Year for the 2024 season.

Just two days after repeating as winner of the Hero World Challenge, an unofficial event that marked his ninth win of the year, Scheffler was surprised with the trophy at a FedEx charity event on Tuesday at the PGA Tour Superstore in Plano, Texas. Scheffler and his wife, Meredith, joined FedEx to help students from the charity, Behind Every Door, shop for holiday presents with PGA Tour Superstore gift cards.

Scheffler received 91 percent of the vote and was selected over Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy.

More: How much money did Scottie Scheffler’s caddie Ted Scott make in 2024?

Scheffler, who won seven Tour events in 2024, the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and the season-long FedEx Cup title, is the first player since Tiger Woods (2005-07) to win Player of the Year honors in three consecutive seasons.

Scheffler joins Woods as the only players to win the Jack Nicklaus Award in three consecutive seasons (est. 1990). Woods won Player of the Year in consecutive seasons from 1999-2003 (five straight) and 2005-2007 (three straight).

Scheffler (2022, 2023, 2024), Woods (11 times, most recent 2013) and McIlroy (2012, 2014, 2019) are the only players to win the award three or more times. Since the inception of the FedEx Cup in 2007, nine players have won the FedEx Cup and Player of the Year in the same season.

“On behalf of the PGA Tour, congratulations to Scottie Scheffler on a truly historic season,” said Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. “Scottie took on challenges from the best players in the world on the biggest stages all season, and being honored as PGA Tour Player of the Year is the ultimate sign of respect from his peers.”

Scheffler won the FedEx Cup for the first time, became the first player to successfully defend his title at the Players Championship and won the Masters for the second time (2022, 2024). In doing so, he became the first player to win the Players, a major championship and the FedEx Cup in the same season. Scheffler also won the Tour Championship and captured four titles at signature events: Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, the Memorial Tournament and Travelers Championship.

His seven-win season marked the first time a player won seven or more times in a single season since Woods in 2007. Throughout the entire season, Scheffler maintained his No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking, a position he has occupied since May 21, 2023 (82 straight weeks). In total, Scheffler recorded a Tour-best 16 top-10s in 19 starts and did not miss a cut.

More: At the Hero World Challenge, Scottie Scheffler joked that he and Tiger ‘talked about money and how the purses need to be bigger’

Scheffler’s season also included a gold medal, winning the men’s Olympic golf competition in his Olympic debut, and a victory for the United States at the Presidents Cup.

For the second consecutive season, Scheffler also received the Byron Nelson Award for recording the lowest scoring average on Tour in 2024 (68.65).

Player of the Year is determined by a member vote, with Tour members who played in at least 15 events during the 2024 season eligible to vote. The voting period ran from November 25 through December 4.

New Tiger Woods PopStroke venue in Florida set to open with upgraded amenities

There’s a new Tiger Woods’ PopStroke set to open in West Palm Beach this month, with a new level of amenities added to the family-friendly golf and dining venue.

PopStroke takes the old concept of mini-golf and elevates it into a high-tech experience that is heavy on perks, plus food and drink.

During a preview of the West Palm Beach complex on Dec. 5, PopStroke Chief Executive Greg Bartoli showed the many details he hopes will transform the nearly $20 million site into a flagship destination for the company.

The location has two artificial turf mini-golf courses set amid tropical landscaping, outdoor lighting and misting fans.

The venue also features a children’s playground, a restaurant, six bars, and six 24-foot-by-13-foot jumbotron video screens that display leaderboards and sports games.

This PopStroke location, the second in Palm Beach County (the other is in Delray Beach), also has the most extra of touches: A 21 and older VIP lounge, featuring a swimming pool and bar.

The West Palm Beach PopStroke, at 2429 Perimeter Rd., will open to the public Dec. 20, at 10 a.m. The property, off Belvedere Road just west of Interstate 95, is on land leased from the Palm Beach International Airport.

Bartoli, who is partners with Woods in the venture, said he’s tried to create a lively atmosphere for everyone, “like a backyard party.”

PopStroke is a far cry from the mini-golf courses that once dotted many Old Florida tourist towns.

But Bartoli said the influx of companies and residents into Palm Beach County in recent years, a trend accelerated during the COVID pandemic, created the need for a centrally-located gathering spot.

“There’s no windmills, no clowns,” Bartoli said of PopStroke. “Instead, we’ve made a beautiful environment that can appeal to different guests.”

Palm Beach County “has the nicest, world-class resorts,” Bartoli added, “and we want to make this a showcase property.”

The newly-built PopStroke reflects the increasingly upscale orientation of businesses throughout Palm Beach County, whether it’s private clubs, hotels, office buildings and shopping centers.

Who can play at PopStroke?

There’s something for everyone at PopStroke, from visitors aged three to 93.

During the day, children and families can play golf or enjoy other games, such as cornhole. In addition to a family-friendly restaurant, there’s also an ice cream parlor.

At night, PopStroke’s dramatic lighting creates the scene for gatherings of friends and professionals, he said.

Meanwhile, the members-only VIP room will be its own scene, right down to the food.

The sushi served in the lounge will be flown in from Japan and prepared by chefs who previously worked at Nobu, Bartoli said.

In addition to the swimming pool and cabanas, the VIP lounge also has showers, changing rooms and lockers.

Courses are near completion during a tour of the soon-to-open PopStroke entertainment venue near Palm Beach International Airport in unincorporated Palm Beach County, Fla., on December 5, 2024. CEO Greg Bartoli says the facility is two weeks from its grand opening. (Thomas Cordy/Palm Beach Post)

‘Sand’ traps, hills and lots of extras

The West Palm Beach location PopStroke features two 18-hole mini-golf courses designed by a professional golf course designer.

The courses are intended to mimic the traits of a regular golf course. This includes plenty of sand traps made of white artificial turf, plus lots of little hills.

In addition to the putting courses, there’s also an extra “challenge” hole to play.

Key to the PopStroke experience is the blending of sports with technology. Guests must download an app to play golf at PopStroke. The app allows players to update their scores on the jumbotron leaderboards. Guests also can order drinks, which are delivered by servers to the customer’s exact spot on the (mini) greens.

PopStroke also has a two-story restaurant and amenities building.

A ground-floor restaurant will serve a traditional American menu. The space opens to a fenced-in children’s playground.

Bartoli, who has three young children, said parents can watch their children play while they finish their meals in peace.

Above the restaurant is a second-floor event space with its own bar. Bartoli said the venue can accommodate up to 100 guests for events ranging from birthday parties to corporate gatherings.

But only VIP club members can rent the upstairs VIP space, he said.

However, for an unspecified amount, he said the entire PopStroke space can be rented out.

How much does it cost to play?

The restaurant is open to the public, and people do not need to buy a golf pass to eat there.

But for those wanting to play the mini-golf courses, PopStroke costs $30 per person for an all-day pass from Monday through Thursday, and $35 from Friday through Sunday.

Discounts are available for children and seniors.

PopStroke memberships are available for $30 a month and provide unlimited golf play, plus 25% off food and beverage and 20% off events.

The VIP space has a different fee: $5,000 a year. VIP members get a “fast pass” to the courses and are first in line to tee off.

Why Bartoli created PopStroke

Bartoli, a former Wall Street banker, moved to Florida several years ago and settled in Jupiter with his young family.

He quickly became a mini-golf aficionado and developed the Lighthouse Cove Adventure Golf course, which has two locations in Jupiter.

But Bartoli said he still yearned for a golf venue where he could bring his three children and enjoy some adult me-time.

When he created PopStroke in 2018, he made sure to include play areas and playgrounds along with sports bars and television sets.

Bartoli opened PopStroke’s first location in Port St. Lucie in 2019, then brought on Woods, who lives in Jupiter Island, as a co-owner in 2020. Woods’ TGR Design redid the Port St. Lucie course.

PopStroke’s first Palm Beach County location, at 1314 N. Federal Highway in Delray Beach, opened in November 2023.

Since then, the company has opened locations across the country, including Las Vegas, Arizona and Texas. More locations are planned.

PopStroke was going to open a location in Wellington, but Bartoli said that spot has been put on hold for now.

Instead, he said PopStroke wants to build up the West Palm Beach location as a dominant destination and attract people “from all over the county.”

Woods isn’t the only major golf investor to get involved in PopStroke Entertainment Group.

The equipment company TaylorMade joined with the venture, too. Each PopStroke venue is outfitted with special edition TaylorMade golf balls for patrons to use on the putting course and take home as a keepsake.

Putters are included in the PopStroke day pass, but premium TaylorMade rental putters can be rented for $10.

PopStroke’s offices in Jupiter and Stuart employ about 75. But the company nationwide employs 2,000.

And at the West Palm Beach location alone, the company expects to hire between 175-200 people, Bartoli said.

The Popstroke golf courses are among the numerous facilities that have been coming to Palm Beach County, which is known by some to be the “golf capital of the world” because it is home to 145 courses and many of the golfers on the PGA Tour.
